Wow, it’s been around 5 months since I’ve arrived in the sweet land of Maple Syrup! I’ve always wanted to make more “helpful” blog posts but never got around to, despite it being one of my yearly resolutions (2013 fail). But today I’m about to change that šŸ˜€ So hopefully this post will help someone out there who was in the same predicament as me just a year ago. I know it all seems daunting, and tempting to just hire a travel or immigration agency to do the dirty work for you…

BUT listen to me before you give that PHP 40k away, you can do it yourself quite EASILY for a fraction of the cost!

Of course, please take into account I applied in 2013 so the laws may have changed depending on when you’re reading this (please comment below for any broken links and I’ll try to get to it). Best to read through the CIC website about Study PermitsĀ first and then come back here. They update their information and website quite regularly.

Ready? Here’s a Step-by-Step process:

1. Depending on your circumstance, determine your eligibility for a Canadian Study Permit.

2. You must apply and be accepted into a school before you can file your study visa/permit. So do your research and exhaust Google as much as you can to find the best school for you. You should also go to IDPĀ Philippines for counselling (I recommend Sir Rhod in Cebu) and sign-up for their mailing list, so you can receive news about international education events where you can meet representatives from the schools personally.

If you wish to study in Australia instead, then you’re in luck. IDP offers FREE services for people to study in Australia. If you really want to use an agency or study in other countries, I highly recommend IDP because they’re internationally recognized.

3. Take the IELTS test and get as high a mark as you can. You don’t have to pay for an IELTS workshop. There are lots of free practice tests floating around the internet. You can easily score at least a 6 or 7 if you can speak conversational English. To take the test, submit an application to your nearest IDP office or book online. The fee as of this writing is Php 8,900 although I think I paid a little less half a year ago…

For Cebu, the IDP office is at the ground floor of Keppel Bldg, Cebu Business Park. Click here for IELTS requirements.

4. Depending on your school, you may have the option to apply online. I strongly recommend you should, unless you have someone in Canada willing to help you with enrolment. For the online process, you can email the school’s International Student Services department if you don’t know where to start. Otherwise, for each program you will see something like an “Apply Now” button. Then it will be a matter of registering yourself a Student Account, uploading your scanned documents (you might have to mail original copies) and regularly logging in to check for updates.

5. I think it took around half a year for me to get accepted into my school. Don’t expect them to reply fast, and I don’t know about you but getting school requirements from Philippine universities wasn’t a piece of cake. Personally, I think you should prepare at least a year for this whole study abroad plan.

Once I was accepted, I received my provisional acceptance letter in the mail which I would need to show when I apply for a study permit. You can now start applying online.

Tip: Don’t settle for the minimum requirements. In addition to your documents, try to get (1) Recommendation Letter for Further Studies from a teacher who likes you, and compose (1) Letter of Intent which explains at most in 2 pages why you’re studying abroad. You should keep in mind that these help prove that you’re a genuine student. In other words, you should prove that there’s no chance of you illegally staying beyond your visa date.

6. Depending on how often CIC updates their website, the way you access the site will change. As of now, you can start applying for your student visa here. Go through their wizard and answer the questions as honestly as you can. Your requirements will be determined by the answers you choose. If you’re in doubt, go with the safest answer. Afterwards, you’ll probably be given something like a Key which will serve as your login details. All requirements to be submitted and respondence from CIC will come through your account. Sometimes they don’t email you directly so check regularly.

Tip: If you get lost, always remember the homepage is atĀ http://cic.gc.ca.

7. Collect and scan all needed requirements like financial documents (bank statements, investment portfolio, corporation documents, credit cards, land titles, etc. whatever applies to you or your supporter), affidavits, digitally completed IMM forms, Canadian visa sized photos, and other supplements depending on how you answered the wizard. The fee is $125 (as of July 2013) payable by credit card. This includes both Study Permit and Temporary Resident Visa, multiple entry. Be sure to follow the specifications for the digital scans.

8. Within the month, you’ll receive a PDF document for your Medical Exam via MyCIC. Call and schedule an appointment for any of the locally appointed doctors by CIC for your area. Bring the printed medical form, photocopy and original passport, and 6pcs of passport-sized photos. It will be a general exam, blood test and X-Ray. The fee I paid was around Php 4,100.

9. After a month,Ā CIC will ask you for your passport. I sent mine over by calling the VIA Call Center to have it picked up. I paid Php 300 for pick-up and delivery. There is a charge per minute when you dial the Call Center. Make sure to prepare your passport number and Application number found on the Letter Request for Passport document from CIC. Follow their instructions on how to seal and label your passport so that it doesn’t get lost.

10. Another month after, I received my POE letter and passport with the study visa!

11. After securing your study visa, you can now take care of other matters like your housing and first term tuition fees. I used BDO to do wire transfer, paid $10 for any amount plus the swap fee. I then bought my plane ticket and emailed a bank inĀ Canada to schedule an appointment to open an account. I highly recommend getting an account with a credit union, like Coast Capital Savings. If you’re unfamiliar about credit unions, research about them first. Otherwise you can go with any of the major banks like TD, RBC, BMO, CIBC, etc.

12. One month after, I paid theĀ deposit for my dorm (first month’s rent+ damage deposit+activity fee for 4 months) and the following month, I packed my bags and flew~

Keep in mind that your case / experience may differ, because the system doesn’t always stay the same. Although I can assure you that it was very convenient and easy to file for the study permit. I did it by myself so you can too! The money you saved can instead be used for your plane ticket/pocket money/investment. Wish you the best~!

Getting the courage to journey out on my own was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself. I grew so much as a person, and I’ve learned and seen things that made me develop a richer perspective about life.

UDPATE – Aug 27, 2015:

Two years went by like a blink of an eye. I graduated last June with flying colors. Yipee, thank you Lord!

Since then this post has gotten a lot of comments and questions, and despite my tardinessĀ in blogging I still take time to answer themĀ depending on my availability. HOWEVER, please diligently read through the thread below for, especially, common burning questions that I may have already answered. To make things a bit easier, I’ll round up some of them:

  1. How much show money do I need? – Read:Ā http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-how-documents.asp#doc3
  2. Can I work part-time while I study? – As of this writing, you can work part-time up to 20 hours per week and full-time during school breaks.
  3. Did you have an interview? – No. Just make sure you provide a “Letter of Intent” and justify that you have no intention ofĀ illegally staying in Canada after your permit expires. Talk about your future plans. šŸ™‚
  4. Can you recommend an agency? I’d rather pay for convenience than do it myself.Ā  – IDP Education. They’re the least expensive reputable agency I know. You can register for the IELTS with them too. Schedule an appointment by calling them up, it’s free.
  5. Do I have to pay tuition right away? – When you enrol into your program, please email admissions / international Ā student center how much payment is required and when it is due. I think it depends on the school. Find their emails on the school’s official website.

Again, everything you need to know is already on their website – http://cic.gc.ca/Ā  Just invest some time reading it through and taking everything in~ Breathe. Pray. Have faith. Do your best. God bless!

Hi, your post is very useful. Can I ask though, do you need to open a dollar account with BDO to pay the tuition fee?

I just used the wire transfer service for $10. They converted CAD to USD so I lost some in between. I don’t know how else you can transfer money in CAD to CAD from the Philippines.

I would like to ask if u submitted academic records in ur online application? Because when i answered the wizard, they did not require it.. so i did not include it. Im scared that it might be one of the reasons to get a refusal šŸ™

Yes I submitted all my official transcripts to the school. My school had an online enrolment procedure so IDP scanned and uploaded them there. You dont submit your academic records to CIC, but to the school!

Hi Anne, thank you for posting this. I’m actually planning to apply for a Graduate Program under George Brown College in Toronto (school starts Jan 2016). To get the letter of acceptance, do I have to pay for the tuition fee first? šŸ™‚

Hi Gail! You’re welcome. I’m glad its helpful šŸ™‚ I don’t remember exactly but I guess you have to pay tuition before receiving the provisional acceptance letter from the school. When you submit that letter to CIC, you’ll be granted a study permit. It’ll only be after you get a study permit that you can be fully accepted into the school.

Hi , mag kano lahat ng nagastos mo? At after 6months ba talagang kailangan bumalik kana ng philippines or you can continue the study? And are you still in canada or nakauwi kana.? Sorry im planning to move there . So i badly need your answer

Here’s an idea of how much the living expense is for an international student. You don’t have to go back after 6 months, or at all as long as your study permit is valid when you’re in Canada. Check the expiry date. That will tell you how long you can stay.

I’m not sure about high school, but I would think you’d still need to enroll to a high school. Ask your Canadian relatives for help. They would know better.

Hi Candy. I don’t remember anymore, but it was a certain amount per school year I think.. Please go to Canada’s main website and dig deep into it. Here you go: http://cic.gc.ca. I only used their website for the information I needed and it was enough. It should be for you as well. Just take time to go through every thing and read up on important information. • 9 years ago

Hello Mae. I’m sorry but I really don’t know if you can. Best to ask your relative over there in Canada (I’m currently in the PH right now). Hello Anne,
    Thank you very helpful blog.
It says in cic, you have to satisfy an immigration officer that you have to go back yo your home country after schooling, does that mean you have to undergo an interview at the immigration office?
So how long did it take you to process all your application given all documents are ready….

Hello Nica, there may or may not be an interview depending on the results of their assessment. It all boils down to your personal documents, but usually there’s no interview. For me, I uploaded an optional “Letter of Intent” (online application) where I elaborated my intent to pursue further studies.

Application processing times vary. A quick google search should satisfy you – http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/temp.asp

Hello Yen, you will be able to work around 20 hours per week as long as your study permit is valid. I was able to do freelance jobs, nothing part-time since my school load was too heavy.

Hello Camille. I’m terribly sorry for the very late reply! From face value, I doubt universities will accept grades below their minimum requirement. • 9 years ago

Hello Toke. A student visa was roughly 150CAD when I applied for it online! If you mean that one school year costs 7500CAD then that’s very good. My semester was a bit more than that.

Hi. this is a very helpful blog. i was actually thinking of applying in Canada because of something i found in jobstreet. You can study while working part-time and this agency will help you get a working visa after you finish our studies.

How do I know this agency is legit? the name is Counselors for Immigration and International Studies Inc.
    http://www.studyabroad.net.ph/

I applied when I was 23 years old. I think you can’t enroll yourself since you’re definitely underage. You need a guardian or counsellor. Consult IDP Education. Google it to find out where their office is around your area šŸ™‚

I have submitted all the requirements thru a rep in canada (agency) and actually I am just waiting for study permit and visa to be released , my question is when CIC asked you to send your passport to the embassy, how long will you wait for it to return to you? Also, how about my case? The classes will start by august 28 and I still don’t have the permit and visa, and housing, what will I need to do?

    Thanks in advance!

I sent my passport to the embassy via VFS at Keppel building (2015). It took around 1-2 weeks for it to return. I do hope you get your visa soon!! Sounds like you should’ve applied way earlier…

Hello Bob. My friend’s situation is a little similar but she’s a Hong Kong citizen.

For financial proof please look up the guide on the CIC website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-how-documents.asp#doc3

Perhaps you can make an Affidavit of Support stating that you will be providing all financial support and accommodation, notarized by a lawyer.

Hi! Your blog is so inspiring. I started applying for a Student Visa, received a confirmation from the school that I applied but got discouraged on the information I have heard. Good thing I came across your blog and boosted my confidence again. I don’t have any relatives in Canada, do you think it would be a plus point for the CIC or for the canadian embassy people to approve visa if you have a relative in Canada to sponsor you? Did you use any relative there for sponsorship while you were applying for your student visa? I am literally doing this all by my self. Thank you so much for the information that you can share. šŸ™‚

Hello LC. I went to Canada by myself with no sponsorship from family/relatives. It’s definitely possible to do it all by yourself given you fulfill CIC’s minimum requirements (financial proof, no criminal record, passed medical exam, etc.)

Make sure you have all necessary documents: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-how-documents.asp

You’ll enjoy it for sure. Take care!

P.S. I don’t think student visas have a point system. From what I know that only applies for PR immigration.

      Answers to your questions:
      1. Not sure it will be… Sorry can’t answer that.
      2. Yes, I only sent my passport when CIC asked for it. They gave instructions on how to submit it too. The process has changed since my blog post.

I’m also applying for a study permit in Canada. I’m scheduled to take my IELTS this Jan. 23. I will just ask if after mo ma-send sa school mo iyong result ng IELTS and other credentials like TOR, magkano yung fee na binayad mo as admission fee sa school na napili mo? Then upon getting your study permit, pwede ka na ba magtravel in advance sa semester na papasukan mo, for example you are a month early? O dapat sa start pa ng school days?

    Thank you so much.

The fee for the school depends on the deposit they ask for based on the tuition. Yes, you can travel a month earlier given your study permit validity dates allow you to.

Hi! Your blog really inspires me to study abroad, specifically in Canada! I really have doubts on studying because of financial support but I really want to. By the way, I am going to be a student in Grade 10 this school year and the program of K to 12 will be starting next school year also. I just want to ask you, is it too early to apply/get a study permit even though I am still on my junior year (Grade 10)? Thank you!

Hi ate! Congrats for being a graduate! By the way, I learned a lot about getting a study permit and I used your blog to explain this to my parents so thank you very much! I will start applying next year as soon as possible haha! Anyway, I would like to ask, is Canadians friendly? Do they not discriminate you whatever race, skin tone, accent, etc. you have? And one last thing, can you atleast describe me briefly about the environment and life in Canada? Maybe I would get a culture shock or I may not be able to adapt their cold environment immediately so I would like to know šŸ™‚ Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
Did you have to attend the Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS)? I did not find anything on http://www.cfo.gov.ph/ about leaving the country on student visa.

Hi Miss Anne! It’s a pleasure to stumble on your informative blog. I just want to ask, in one of the the comments here you stated that you took academic training for your IELTS. If its okay, may I know what did you exactly do? And is IELTS same with TOEFL? And if it’s not, is either of the 2 accepted in Canada or is one more favored? Lastly, for how long did everything take you? (from applying to arriving in Canada). Thank you so much!

Hello ann, I hope your website is still active so you could read this. Actually, upon reading your website last January I started my school application in Ontario Canada online & got my letter of acceptance after two months of waiting. Afterwards, I applied my visa online just like what you did, wish me luck hehe. My questions are, can I apply my residency after the study program? Are you still in Canada? How many weeks did you wait for you to get the form for Medical exam? I am currently tense right now. I hope everything goes well. Thank you so much for a very informative blog.

    Hi Anne,

Okay lang ba na-isend mo na yung application mo kahit wala pang upfront medical exam/ Then mag-antay na lang ng advise from MyCIC para magpamedical. Kasi binasa ko yung guidelines for medical report, may two ways to take medical exam, pwede daw mag-wait for the advise at pwede rin kumuha na ng upfront in advance.
Thank you. Hope you can help me with this matters.

    Hi Ms. Anne,

    Greetings!

I am thankful that your blog was my pattern upon applying as a student permit visa. Recently, I received a letter from CIC requesting my passport (by the way I applied online thru CIC). I still have ome month time prior on the start of my class in Richmond,Vancoiver,CA.

I would like to ask based on your own experience some questions that can be a big help for me.

    1. Can I ask upon going to Canada, did anyone from the Philippine Authorities/Agencies asked you of any seminar/orientation certificates as a student permit visa holder to submit in the airport?

    2. Upon reading your answers to your blog, you mentioned that to an another person that he/she can apply thru online to open a bank account in Scotia Bank, and so forth I will apply to this Bank also. I want to know when you arrived in Canada, what sort of funds did you brought to show CSBA that you have indeed the enough funds for your schooling?Did you brought some cash, bank drafts or cheques amounting to $10,000 CAD or less than? Are CSBA people strict on reviewing your papers/documents and to your proof of funds that you need to show them that you have it?

I am hoping that you can enlight me about my queries.

    Thanks

Hi Anne. I applied for a student VISA yesterday. I have submitted all my documents including NBI Clearance and Up Front Medical. I am hoping that I will get an early response because based on CIC, the application from the Philippines would take 9 weeks. Is it really going to be 9 weeks or is there a chance that it will be faster? I think I have submitted all the documents needed. Can you tell me how many months did you process everything from the day you have submitted your application?

    Hi Anne,

Can you share the exact school in Canada you enrolled yourself into? Did you just apply in one school or tried several? And the reasons why you chose that school? From your knowledge, what other colleges or universities would be strategic in applying for a study permit? (Eg. less rigid application process/requirements, cheaper fees, etc.) Thanks in advance!

I have pahabol question, Anne, if you don’t mind. ‘Coz one thing that really confuses me with the study permit process is the timing of application, since from what I understood, colleges/universities there follow certain schedules/deadline for the intake alone, the enrollment itself, etc. and the visa processing itself (if ever you get accepted by a school) also takes time. So, what general rule of thumb can you give with regards to the timing and commencement of the entire application? Around how many months should we alot between the start of the study/course/program and the start of the application? Thanks again!

    Hi Anne

Thank you for this info. My sister is coming to study in Canada in January, she got her visa and everything but I know that in Manila airport they give Filipino citizens a hard time when they don’t have a return ticket. My sister also is in a two year program and we would like to buy one way now and another one way ticket after two years. How did you do it? Did you buy a roundtrip ticket and just changed the dates or will Manila airport not ask a student visa holder for a return ticket? I could not find this info anywhere. I would really appreciate your answer. Thank you.

    Hello Anne,

This is very informative blog. One of my friend is considering to move in Canada and I will forward this to him. In last few years many changes happened in immigration policies and rules. Some are good and some are ok.

Secondly, I want to share my experience with you as well as with other visitors. I immigrated almost 6 years ago and during my last move, I was bit nervous for not finding the right place to live. I was nervous because I had few stringent requirements. Anyway, I came across a free alert service offered by http://www.ashiro.ca. This website is some sort of Canadian rental billboard and I found very helpful. As a result of signing to the alert service, I found the rental place in one week time. No hassles! Anyone looking to move to Canada should try their alert service. I can tell you, it is worth it.
Finally, my good wishes to all who have applied for visa or PR.

Hello, Thank you for your post. I would like to ask you about sponsorship. I would like to study in Canada and i already got an admission, so the next step is to apply for a study permit. A family friend has accepted to sponsor my education but i do not know what kind of documents i would need from her. I know it is the Sponsor letter and the bank statement that is required but i would like to know how they are validated by the embassy. Should they be authenticated but a public notary or it is not necessary. She currently has $25000 on her account but my education would be 4 years long and my expenses per year would be $23000 per year( tuition+living expense). Is her $25K enough for the embassy to issue the study permit? or She should have the total amount for four years ( $92K). Can someone be sponsored by someone in another country (Not Philippines or Canada)? If so how are their documents for sponsorship validated. Thank you in advance

Hello, Anne! I applied to an agency in Canada for my study program, and my visa have been approved. Since the agency is not from the Philippines, I’m afraid there might be some requirements or other things we need to do that the Philippine government required us before leaving to Canada. May I know what are the documents we need to present to the immigration officer aside from the Study permit, medical insurance, Letter of Acceptance, Enrollment contract and of course the passport with visa? Thank you so much!

    Hi Anne!

Your post is very inspiring and very informational. I have read the costs and the steps that you have done in order for you to go there. However, I’m a bit unsure if I can provide the necessary amount that I need for the whole year of my stay in Canada as a student. Did you pay your tuition fee for the whole year in order for you to get a student permit? Or is it based on the University policy on how much will be the initial payment?

I hope to hear from you soon.

    Thank you!

If I remember right, I sent a downpayment to the school after I got the conditional letter of acceptance. I think this process should be based on the school so best to ask your university enrolment services!

Hi! May i ask how many years did you study in Canada? I was planning to study for 1 year graduate certificate to help obtain a PR however there are some people who said that its rather risky to study for 1 year since that would only give 1 year of post graduate work permit. And upon reading, Canada express entry needs atleast 1 year of work experience, which is quite risky since i have to apply the pgwp before my student visa expired, that would mean i would not get a complete 1 year work experience. Is that the same casewith you? And did you apply for PR using Canada express entry? Thanks for your help.

I chose a diploma that was for 2 years, in order to get the maximum length for Post Graduate Work Permit – which is 3 years! So I was able to comply with the 1 year work experience easily. And yes, I applied via Express Entry. I made a follow up post on how to apply for PR on this same blog. You can search for it.

This is too relative, it really depends on your budget and plan. I did 2 years because the course I wanted was so. If you want to play it safe, 2 years is good because it can give you a 3 year post-grad work permit.
